May 2018 Newsletter
You may have noticed that the delivery system for our monthly newsletter has changed. With the recent redesign of our website, we now have a Latest News page, which contains updates, monthly newsletters, and any pieces of information we need to get out to our customers. If you are on our email list, you will receive a notification whenever something new has been posted, provided our emails are not going to your SPAM or JUNK folder. Even if you’ve missed an email, you can just go to our website, click on LATEST NEWS, and get all of the information that was once contained in an email. The other benefit is that all of the entries will be available for you on our website whenever you want to look at it. I spend a lot of time re-sending emails to people who accidentally deleted an email. This will no longer be a problem! And, you can also comment on the newsletter or post if you’d wish!
May is always a busy month and there is a lot of news, so let’s get to it!
Friday May 25th is National Tap Dance Day!
The most exciting thing about the month of May is that we get to celebrate National Tap Dance Day! The brainchild of Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval and Linda Christensen, National Tap Dance Day was first presented to the U.S. Congress on February 7, 1989, and was signed into American Law by President George. H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989. May 25 is the birthday of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, a significant contributor to the art of tap dance. He performed in vaudeville shows and on Broadway, but he is probably best known for his film career, which included several movies with Shirley Temple.
For our National Tap Dance Day Celebration this year, all of our classes on May 25 will be FREE! Space is limited, so we strongly recommend that you register in advance. We have 3 classes that day:
9 am Tap Level 1: for people who are familiar with the basics
10 am Tap Level 3: a fast-paced Intermediate level class. We have been working on Eddie Brown’s BS Chorus this session (also known as the “E.B. Chorus”)
11 am Never-2-Late Tap: for the total beginner
In addition to the free classes, we will have a prize drawing at the end of each class for those in attendance.
To register, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and include the following information:
- Full name (first and last name)
- Phone number
- E-mail address
- Which class you would like to take (Due to the limited space available, there is a limit of one free class per person.)
Spring 2018 Session Schedule Update
Our Spring 2018 Session is well underway. We did cancel both of the Level 2.4 classes that were on the schedule due to low enrollment numbers. All other classes will remain on the schedule for the duration of the session. This session will run through Friday, June 22.
Memorial Day Holiday
The studio will be closed on Monday, May 28 in observation of Memorial Day. If you are registered for a Monday class, you may attend another class on the schedule as a make-up for the missed class. If that does not work for you, please speak to Mary so that we can discuss other options.
Tap Shoe Donations
Do you have an old pair of tap shoes collecting dust in your closet? Are they still in good enough shape that someone could use them? Consider donating them to our “loaner shoe” collection. Donate a pair and we’ll credit your account with a free class. No character taps or high heel taps, please.
Session Changes Are Coming
The survey we ran in February gave us a lot of insight into what our customers want. One thing we heard from several people was that our sessions were too long and most people liked the idea of having a session length anywhere from 6 – 8 weeks. Very often, students will need to miss a week or two and jumping back in can be difficult. Having to wait for the next 11 week session to start can seem like a long time. Based on this feedback, we have decided to shorten our session length beginning with the next session. Each session will now run 2 months and we will have 6 sessions a year instead of our current 4. This change will also mean that we will need to adjust what is covered in each of our level 2 classes, as we cannot cover the same amount of material in a 2 month session. Instead of 6 sub-levels of 2, we will expand to 8. We will also adjust our session prices accordingly. We hope to have the new schedule and pricing structure ready by National Tap Dance Day. The July/August 2018 Session will begin on Monday, July 9.
On Wednesday, April 25, 5 members of the HeartBeat Tap Ensemble performed and the Scottsdale Senior Entertainment Extravaganza at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. This was our 2nd year performing in this annual event that highlights the many talented seniors in the area.

Tap 24.7 Annual Show and Master Classes
It wouldn’t be National Tap Dance Day in Arizona without a show from our friends at Tap 24.7!

The day before the show, on Saturday, May 26, Tap 24.7 will be offering their annual TAPAPALOOZA tap dance master classes taught by members of Tap 24.7 and the guest artists who will be appearing in the show. These classes will be held at Mesa Community College. The class schedule is:

Looking for something besides tap dance? We rent our studio space to these other groups and teachers. If you are interested in their classes, please contact them directly. Renters are responsible for everything having to do with their classes. They set their own prices, handle their own enrollments, and determine the content of their classes. We simply provide them with the space.
